You’ve just given birth, and let’s be real: sex with your partner is probably the last thing on your mind. While you have a pass for the first 8 weeks following a Cesarean delivery, once you are given the all-clear by your doctor at your first post-natal appointment, you may begin wondering how to go about having safe (and enjoyable) intercourse post-C-section. Thankfully, there are plenty of empowering positions to explore to help you reconnect with your spouse during this time. Let’s dive in!

How soon can you have sex after a C-section?

A C-section is a major surgical procedure that involves making incisions through the abdominal wall and uterus to deliver the baby. After a C-section, your body needs time to heal, and engaging in sexual activity prematurely can lead to complications such as pain, infection, or even injury.

Further, the emotional toll of childbirth, whether it be through C-section or vaginal delivery, should not be underestimated. Many women experience feelings of vulnerability, insecurity, or detachment from their bodies following childbirth. These emotions can affect their desire for intimacy and their comfort level during sexual activity.

If any of this describes you, you are certainly not alone. If you have any concerns about your physical or emotional health following childbirth, it is critical to consult with your healthcare provider as soon as possible for a full evaluation.

How can I safely have sex post-C-section?

Once you do start feeling more like yourself and are ready to start reexploring sexual intimacy with your partner, it may be preferable to start slow and go from there. Here are some ways to initiate sexual intercourse with your partner during the postpartum period after a C-section.

Spooning

Spooning is a gentle and intimate position that can be particularly comforting for post-C-section mothers. It involves lying on your side, facing the same direction as your partner, with their body curled around yours. This position allows for close physical contact without putting pressure on the abdomen or incision site.

Side-lying

Similar to spooning, side-lying involves lying on your side but facing your partner. This position provides easy access for intimacy while minimizing strain on the abdominal muscles. It also allows for close eye contact and emotional connection, which can enhance the overall experience.

Cowgirl (woman on top)

Once you’re mentally prepared for the “real thing,” the woman-on-top position can be safe and enjoyable for post-C-section mothers, provided it is approached with caution. By controlling the pace and depth of penetration, women can ensure their comfort level. Additionally, this position allows for greater control, which can be empowering for women reclaiming their bodies after childbirth.

Modified missionary

The traditional missionary position can be modified to accommodate post-C-section discomfort. Instead of lying flat on your back, try placing a pillow under your hips to elevate them slightly. This can reduce pressure on the incision site while still allowing for intimate contact with your partner.

Rear entry

Be the expert in you.

Take the Quiz

Rear entry positions, such as doggy style, can be comfortable during the postpartum period as they avoid direct pressure on the abdomen. However, it's essential to communicate with your partner and adjust the angle and depth of penetration to ensure your comfort and safety.

Listen to your body (and mind)

Studies have shown that many women experience a decline in sexual activity and satisfaction following childbirth, regardless of the delivery method. However, research also suggests that intimacy can play a critical role in postpartum recovery and emotional well-being. With time and support from your partner, you can find ways to reconnect and enjoy sex again.

Remember to listen to your body, communicate openly with your spouse, and seek professional guidance if you encounter any concerns or complications. Ultimately, post-C-section intimacy is about reclaiming your body, embracing your strength, and celebrating the incredible journey of parenthood with the person you love.
